Snowflake-Make a Difference
According to the AACAP (American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry) the starting age of using alcohol is 12. The average age of beginning marijuana use is 14. The most important reason why kids do this is the inadequate information about consequences.
To help kids be aware about the dangers of destructive decisions, Illini Bluffs has the organization “Snowflake.” Under the leadership of Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Fuller, students from the high school will teach younger kids about the harm of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs. They will also discuss topics such as Teen/ Parent Relationships and Succeeding in High School. To become a Teen Staff member, each person had to go through a special application process.
“I saw what alcohol can cause, and I just want to show the kids that you can have fun without alcohol and drugs,” said an IBHS student about her motivation to join Snowflake.
Snowflake is for IB sixth, seventh, and eighth graders and will take place on March 18, 2010 from 3:15 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. The cost for the event is $15.
