In Mr. Wirth’s Improv Community Hour, learning is active, noisy and often hilarious as students sharpen their Improv skills. Daily games and challenges are opportunities to develop leadership skills, practice teamwork, and build confidence. As time with our first quarter Community Hours is coming to an end, students in Mr. Wirth's Improv class expressed that the most memorable part of this class has been developing friendships with new people and finding a space where they can be their best selves. #ibtigerpride

Mr. Brown returned to the classroom today - as a Community Hour teacher! Students in the Mindful Thrifting class have discussed what it means to be mindful, and their lesson today helped them understand what this means in neighborhoods. Engaged and challenged, students learned the history and nature of gentrification, as well as the difference between gentrification and revitalization. They also learned that their principals are still teachers, and their teachers are still learners!

Mr. Teel's Intro to DIY Community Hour students have been learning about the basic skills and tools needed for a variety of DIY projects. Most of the students in this Community Hour had never set foot in the Industrial Tech shop before, but this quarter they've had the opportunity to participate in a variety of hands-on activities, which included designing, creating, and installing a made-from-scratch information center for the middle school. Great job, DIYers! #ibtigerpride

Ms. Gresham's Mindful Thrifting Community Hour has covered topics ranging from repurposed thrifted fashion to creative room design, but today's activity focused on mindful thrifting at the grocery store as students partnered up to participate in a Thrifty Food Challenge. Groups were given about a dozen clearance-priced food items and asked to plan a meal for four people. They were encouraged to consult with "experts" here at school - mostly Mr. Murphy and Mrs. Cowen, who provided excellent advice! Mindful Thrifting will partner with The Cookery, a cooking school and restaurant in Morton, and Sous Chef Joe Gresham (IB Alum) will judge the "best" student-created meal and show the Mindful Thrifting class how to prepare it from scratch. In the coming weeks, the Mindful Thrifting Community Hour will create a Thrift and Thrive pop-up display, take a field trip to Goodwill, and learn about the related topic of gentrification from guest speaker Mr. Brown.

Today, the Bigger, Faster, Stronger Community Hour focused on deadlifts, bench and squats in the weight room. Mr. Waters works closely with this group to help each student identify their own fitness goals, track their progress, and assess their personal growth throughout the quarter. Students cited a variety of reasons for choosing this Community Hour, ranging from improving performance in a chosen sport to simply taking time to focus on getting stronger. Bigger, Faster, Stronger encourages students to take ownership of their physical health and helps builds a foundation for a lifetime of healthy habits.

The library was certainly NOT quiet during Mrs. Patrick's Dungeons and Dragons Community Hour today! Students formed game groups, providing a leadership opportunity for more experienced players to serve as Dungeon Masters and to lead their less experienced classmates, or player characters, through the twists and turns of the game. Laughter and jeers filled the library as students analyzed scenarios, assumed character roles (complete with creepy goblin voices ), evaluated the most effective spells and attacks, and rolled the dice to determine their fate. Throughout the quarter, students will immerse themselves in a variety of D&D scenarios that will require them to refine their teamwork, strategy, and creative problem-solving skills, and, eventually, they will develop their own characters and settings, plot original scenarios, and take their classmates on an adventure of their own creation.

Walt Disney himself would’ve been impressed with the educational magic that occurred in Mr. Hallstrom’s Disney Community Hour on Monday. Not only did students battle over the knockouts of Disney movie brackets, but they also received a mini-ethics and philosophy lesson. The class period began with a quote from German philosopher Immanuel Kant which stated “do the right thing simply because it is right.” After contemplating, students became philosophers as they questioned who, exactly, defines what is “right?" Students pondered their own moral compass and explored the theme of lying as illustrated in Disney’s Pinnochio. Mr. Hallstrom presented his students with specific scenarios that required them to question whether or not telling the truth is ALWAYS the “right” choice. To top off the magical hour, students captured the Disney spirit by creating their own “wish upon a jar” projects.
